CAMP CARROLL, South Korea -- Perseverance in the fight against COVID-19 has paid off for medical logisticians at the US Medical Materiel Center in Korea.

The USAMMC-K team, which reports directly to the Medical Logistics Command, helps protect the workforce on the Korean Peninsula by streamlining ordering processes and allowing customers to receive much-needed PPE and COVID-19 testing kits faster.

USAMMC-K serves as the lead medical materiel agent providing direct support to United States Forces Korea or USFK medical forces and ensuring integration into the medical supply chain of tactical units. It also helps combat teams plan medical logistics support.

Processing times for orders for personal protective equipment, including masks, gowns and gloves, have been cut eightfold since August — from an average of 24 days to three days, according to center officials.

"Previously, some of their orders were four weeks to 10 weeks," said Capt. Andres Gil, USAMMC-K's chief of materiel management. "In particular, there was a backlog of [COVID-19] test kits, with some customers waiting eight weeks for this vital supply."

With flu activity expected to increase during the winter, personal protective equipment and testing kits have become more important to slow the potential spread of a respiratory virus with symptoms similar to COVID-19.

The improvements allowed the center to support the needs of the military, Department of Defense Educational Services and US Embassy customers on the Korean Peninsula.

Having supplies available and ready to go helps keep the workforce healthy and increases mission readiness, he said.

"The team accomplished this by ordering all PPE through a strategic management system," said Gill, who is also the USAMMC-K Accountability Officer. "This is based on streamlining the ordering process through existing warehouses."

To recognize the achievement, executives honored members of the distribution center for their hard work as part of the center's October Employee of the Month program.

Gill said these efforts demonstrate the USAMMC-K team's dedication and attention to detail to ensure the best care for its clients during the COVID-19 response.

USAMMC-K commander Lt. Col. Marcus D. Perkins led the initiative, providing vision and direction to ensure the team is ready for "any new waves of COVID" on the Korean Peninsula, Gil said.

"Our ability to meet the demand for personal protective equipment has grown and ... we will continue to focus on meeting that demand," Gill said. "All of this was made possible by the excellent leadership and execution of our staff."
