Good Riddance, Blueberries! Navy Bids Farewell To Its Worst Uniform Ever

Comfort, current fashion and performance are key factors for the US Fleet Forces Command as it develops a two-piece flame-retardant work uniform that can be used in place of existing standard aircraft, service officials USNI said.

This summer, about 350 sailors from the surface warfare, aviation and submarine communities are testing how well the two-piece flame retardant uniform prototypes fit into their daily routines. The tests officially began on Friday and will continue until September, said Fleet Forces spokesman Lt. Jamie Seibel USNI on Monday.

"This will be an option for people who are on sea duty who don't need the hood," Seibel said.

The desire for a fire-resistant two-piece work uniform was fueled more than a year ago when the fleet forces tested the now-approved improved flame-resistant coverall.

The goal, set in January 2017, was to cover a flame-resistant alternative that offers some sailors some flexibility in what they wear on board. As a single piece of clothing, the coat is limited in how well sailors can wear it in a hot environment. The two-piece is intended to provide a professional and modern-looking alternative, allowing sailors to wear command-approved T-shirts in appropriate situations, according to a Fleet Forces statement.

Feedback from the corral test, Seibel told the USNI, was that the sailor said, "I really want to wear something from the ship."

Three variations are tested: a dark navy blue top and pants; A light blue top with dark blue pants; And khaki tops and pants. Also tested during the process is an ankle-high work boot with a steel toe and oil-resistant body and tread, similar to a slip-on Chelsea-style boot.

Sailors are encouraged to take the Fleet Forces Course Online survey on two-piece uniform variations. The Fleet Forces Facebook page has received over 100 comments about the two-piece uniform. Many say that an untucked shirt looks unprofessional.

Whether or not the Navy is left with an unsavory look is one of several design questions the fleet will consider after the review and comment period ends, Seibel said.
